Class Relives Memories in Jamaica

KINGSTON, JAMAICA: If feedback is any guide, then Excelsior High School's Class of 1977's recent reunion was a smashing success-according to the gathering consensus.
There were laughs. There were amusing anecdotes. But when the Class of 1977 recently met in Jamaica for its reunion there was, mostly, a group of long lost friends straining to recapture memories. More than that, the weekend was a celebration of friendship and the spirit of togetherness that has endured for more than four decades.

Excelsior alumnus Ambassador Courtenay Rattray ('76) recently assumed his new role as Jamaica's Permanent Representative to the United Nations in New York, following a tour of duty as Jamaica's Ambassador to China. Before that, he served as the Deputy Chief of Mission in Jamaica's Embassy in Washington, DC.

Not just a track meet, it has been transformed into something else. The annual extravaganza is even more----a carnival of colors, flags and frivolity; of sights and sounds and easy camaraderie among friends, and good natured jousting between rivals.

Excelsior High School won the Inter-Secondary Schools Sports Association Boys Athletic Championships (Boys Champs) in 1960. Excelsior were the favourites and they did not disappoint, with such stars as sprinters, Noel Mitchell, Carlton “Rollie” Knibb & Mercer Boyd, and Middle distance man Earl Belcher. Captain D. Hornet was injured, but the team’s depth was such that they were able to secure victory

Mr. Leslie Ellis (1934-2012), father of Owen Blakka Ellis('77), died last evening in Toronto after a short illness.

Mr Ellis, who had lived in Toronto for more than four decades, was a retired tailor, designer, singer & songwriter and sang with the group Alton & the Flames led by younger brother, the late Alton Ellis. Sister Hortense Ellis, also another noted singer, also predeceased him.

MIRAMAR, FL-Come September, students at Excelsior will return to school to a gleaming dance studio courtesy of the Excelsior Alumni Association of Florida says President Althea Brown Robinson.

Conceived as the Alumni Association’s signature 80th Anniversary Project the undertaking, a joint effort with Excelsior High School, the renovation of just the floor will cost approximately US$4,682.00 (J$398,000) of which the South Florida alumni group will kick in an estimated US$4000.00 (J$320,000.00).

Xmas Bash 2011: A December to Remember

Great music. Good vibes. Delectable food. Unbridled joviality: Xmas Bash 2011 had all the elements that patrons have come to expect, and which have made the annual South Florida soiree a calendar event for many alumni and supporters. As close to four hundred people clogged the Caribbean Cultural Center (formerly the Warehouse) in Lauderhill last Saturday night, the air conditioner was no match for the heat generated by so many bodies tightly jammed and swaying to the sweet and sultry sounds of Mark Swaby’s musical selections.

The Consul-General and Staff of the Jamaican Consulate, Miami, takes this opportunity to express sincere thanks for the kind generosity demonstrated in response to the recent appeal for assistance with donations for returning to Jamaica the remains of Mr. Joyson Lyons. You may recall that Mr. Lyons, a Jamaican citizen, died suddenly on June 30th while visiting his daughter Marcia Lyons, a full-time nursing student at Miami-Dade College.

Florida Alumni's 80th Anniversary Gala Celebrates School, Teachers

On a searing summer evening in South Florida, celebration and introspection were both in the air as the Excelsior Alumni Association of Florida hosted its inaugural Dinner and Dance, Saturday July 16, at the Miramar Multi-Purpose Center, to commemorate the 80th anniversary of the founding of the alma mater.

Two chapters join in fundraiser

The Florida and New York Alumni chapter will unite in an effort to raise funds for their alma mater. Both chapters will be launching a fundraising raffle on May 1, 2011 and in keeping with the school's 80th anniversary have adopted the slogan "going for $80K".
